Imagine me, sitting in front of a computer on a Saturday night, trying to do math homework and watch Buzzfeed videos at the same time. I know I should probably just focus, but one four minute video led to another... and another... and another... until a couple hours already passed..
I told myself, one more video. Seriously, this was going to be the last and best video of the night.
Buzzfeed has a lot of videos, some of which are tailored for different racial groups. Because I am an Asian, I enjoy watching the videos about "Asian People Problems". Some of them are hilarious, like how people always assume I'm either Chinese or some other Asian Nationality. Oh, and how when I do a peace sign, it's SOO Asian but when someone of a different ethnicity does it, it's totally normal.
Anyway, I was watching some videos not from just Buzzfeed but also other youtubers (whose names I do not know because I erased my history. You'll find out why soon.). The videos in the right column were all very boring or already watched, so I decided to just look up similar videos with key terms. This is where it gets ugly. I meant to type in "Asian girls buzzfeed" but I pressed the enter button too early and ended up searching "Asian girls" on youtube. Can I just say, I regret ever ever ever pressing that enter button early. Oh gosh, my eyes... Let's just say it wasn't something I would have liked to look at. Thankfully, the first video was an actual video I was looking for so I got out of there fast, but the experience itself was just terrible.
I normally don't see advertisements or anything huge related to media because I don't have TV or Netflix. So, I need to actually go out and look for media-related material. As much as I hated to admit it, this scenario fit one of the possible prompts for these journals: What you like or didn't like about a certain thing on media.
Horrible mistake, but it had to be done. I had to make sure it was a legit thing on youtube before I posted about it on BlogPost for everyone to read. So, I searched "white girls" on youtube, praying something along the lines of "White Chicks" the movie would pop up. NOPE. NOT EVEN CLOSE.
I can't help but wish these kinds of things were restricted to just official sites, not scattered around where anyone can see it. I know that's the point, but still. Like I have ad block and I don't think there's a thing such as a p*** block. These kinds of things should really be under more monitoring so that it doesn't get out of hand. I thought YouTube asked or forced the removal of videos that are inappropriate. There may have been an age restriction once you click on the video, but I didn't do that so I wouldn't know.

This is pretty crazy that happened. I was dying laughing! By the way, I totally agree with what you wrote. Google should make some tool to allow viewers to know whether the video they are watching is appropriate or not. The issue for me is how that would be done. It seems like the company could easily create censorship on their site. When that happens, I believe that the right of free speech would not be allowed on their site. And that's where I have a problem with censorship. I am absolutely agreeing with you on the fact that YouTube should allow users to identify videos which they are watching. I disagree on the solution to the problem, hence the free speech shenanigans above. Great article, and I am grateful you commented on my blog. (You're the only one yet!)
ReplyDeleteIt really sucks. Don't worry you are not alone. Advertisement for THAT just pop up. Its horrific and there really are things one wishes to be able to erase. Being exposed to media, means that you will see things that we wish we could unsee and I agree that there should be some type of censorship, especially since nowadays kids are practically born with a phone in their hands.
